Function
N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine is a biochemical reagent widely used in medicine. It is primarily known as a mucolytic agent, often referred to by trade names such as "Expectorant" or "Easy Cough Relief." It plays a significant role in the treatment of thick and viscous mucus. The mechanism of action of N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine lies in the presence of a thiol group in its molecular structure. This group breaks the disulfide bonds in the mucin glycoprotein chains, reducing their viscosity and effectively liquefying the mucus, making it easier to expel via coughing.
This makes N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine suitable for individuals suffering from respiratory diseases where the mucus is thick and difficult to clear, particularly in cases of acute or chronic respiratory conditions. It is also beneficial in severe cases where large amounts of thick mucus block the airways, making it difficult to breathe.
