White fine crystals or crystalline powder. Odorless with a sweet taste. Melting point 224-227°C. Relative density 1.752, 1.542 (for the dihydrate). Stable in air, heat, strong acids, and bases. Its aqueous solution is neutral to litmus paper. Non-optically active. Soluble in 61 ml of water per gram. Slightly soluble in ethanol, insoluble in ether and chloroform.
A B-vitamin. The cyclic hexanol has 9 stereoisomers, among which only the myo-inositol stereoisomer has physiological activity. A type of phospholipid, inositol is widely distributed in cells as a component in the form of phosphatidylinositol. In plants, it exists as inositol hexakisphosphate calcium magnesium ester. Mainly used as a nutritional supplement.
